Kolar district
6 of 6 taluks already draw more groundwater than recharges, and 79.8% of households are recorded with a tap, with the gap sitting in the blocks without canal water, Bangarapet and Malur.
Read as of 2026-09-19, from 154 Gram Panchayats in 6 blocks, 147 of them with a brief that cleared the evidence floor.
District stage of extraction 184.4%, assessed over-exploited. Assessed per revenue taluk, not per block or Panchayat.
2,06,062 connections against 2,58,342 households in 147 Panchayats.
13,914 sources on the JJM register, 13,632 of them deep tubewell; 49 on surface water.
Type a name, a block or an LGD code; all 154 are listed. Press Enter to open the first match, or browse by block further down.
What the district runs on
Irrigation from the Census village tables (Census 2011 release; village reference year 2009), drinking water from the sources JJM records today. A Panchayat without a measure lowers that measure’s denominator rather than counting as a zero.
- Canals3.3%(368 ha)
- Wells40.9%(4,562 ha)
- Tanks22.0%(2,454 ha)
- Other sources33.8%(3,770 ha)
Census 2011 village tables, covering 153 of 154 Panchayats with a land record. A historical baseline, not current cropping. Only 278 of the district's 1,797 Census villages are joined to a Panchayat (the register lists only some of each Panchayat's villages), so this is a partial sample, not the district.
- Ground Water99.6%(13,862)
- Surface Water0.4%(49)
- Rain Water0.0%(2)
- Bulk water (from MVS)0.0%(1)
JJM, read 2026-09-19. Commonest source types: Deep Tubewell (13,632), Open Well (185), Shallow Tubewell (44), Stream (43).
99.6% of the 13,914 drinking-water sources JJM records here draw on groundwater (13,632 of them deep tubewells), against 49 on surface water.
Groundwater by taluk
IN-GRES assesses revenue taluks, not blocks or Panchayats. These are the units the district is actually assessed in, and the headroom reading is written from them.
IN-GRES 2024-2025 puts total groundwater availability across the 6 taluks at 33,033 ham a year, 21,359 ham of it rainfall recharge, with 0 ham (0%) left for future use. Of the 6 taluks, 6 over-exploited. The district as a whole is assessed over-exploited at 184.4% of extraction. No taluk has any groundwater left for future use.
| Taluk | Stage of extraction | Category | Rainfall recharge (ham) | Total availability (ham) | Left for future use (ham) | Rainfall (mm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mulabagilu | 213.2% | over-exploited | 4,984 | 8,493 | 0 | 895 |
| Kolar | 200.2% | over-exploited | 4,082 | 7,368 | 0 | 840 |
| K.g.f | 190.6% | over-exploited | 1,994 | 3,361 | 0 | 890 |
| Bangarpet | 187.6% | over-exploited | 2,871 | 4,030 | 0 | 764 |
| Malur | 169.6% | over-exploited | 3,267 | 4,788 | 0 | 798 |
| Srinivaspura | 119.7% | over-exploited | 4,160 | 4,992 | 0 | 758 |
IN-GRES 2024-2025. The stage of extraction is annual draft as a share of total availability; above 100 percent, more is drawn each year than the taluk is assessed to have. Rainfall recharge is one component of that availability. The year is the hydrological-year label, not an edition date. 154 of 154 Panchayats inherit their containing taluk's category by administrative membership, as containing-area context rather than a measurement of the place; 0 are deferred rather than guessed.
Blocks compared
The same measures per block. Where a district average hides a gradient, this is where it shows, and the findings are written before the table rather than left for the reader to find.
Canal share runs from 9.7% in Srinivaspur to 0.0% in Kolar Gold Field and Mulbagal; wells fill the difference, 55.7% of irrigated farmland at the bottom of the gradient against 36.9% at the top.
The tap gap sits on the blocks without canal water: Bangarapet (75.0% of households, 5.5% canal), Malur (75.7% of households, 0.6% canal), Srinivaspur (78.6% of households, 9.7% canal), Kolar (82.2% of households, 1.4% canal), Mulbagal (82.4% of households, 0.0% canal) and Kolar Gold Field (84.2% of households, 0.0% canal). Each of these blocks sits mostly in a taluk assessed over-exploited or critical, so closing the gap draws on a source already in deficit.

Canal, well and tank figures are shares of the irrigated farmland beside them, not of households and not of drinking water. They come from Census 2011 (Census 2011 release; village reference year 2009) and cover only the 153 Panchayats with a Census land record, so a block with few such records shows a share of a small area. Only 278 of the district's 1,797 Census villages are joined to a Panchayat (the register lists only some of each Panchayat's villages), so this is a partial sample, not the district. Tap and testing figures are JJM and current at the read date. The talukcategory is the one most of the block’s Panchayats inherit by projection, which here is the taluk the register places them in. Untested counts Panchayats whose most recent water-quality sample is more than 90 days before 2026-09-19; ninety days is the Atlas’s own threshold for calling a series stale, not a statutory testing interval.
District Environment Plan
Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Kolar District prepared the plan on the CPCB model under the NGT's 2019 order. What it states about water is transcribed below, each figure with the page it sits on; nothing here is computed from it.
Dated 2022-04-16, 92 pages. Read the plan (PDF). The plan prints no date of its own and its closing 'Deputy Commissioner, Kolar District, Kolar.' block is unsigned; the date is the PDF's creation date, 16 April 2022, which matches the 2022/04 upload path. The latest periods the text refers to are 'From the year 2019-20' (K&C Valley) and action-plan timelines of 'Dec-2022'.
Transcription checked against the document on 2026-09-19.
| Figure | As stated | Where |
|---|---|---|
Minor irrigation tanks (ayacut 40 to 2,000 ha) The taluk table on the same page splits them Kolar 44, Malur 11, Bangarpet 7, KGF 6, Mulbagal 35, Srinivaspura 35. Not the same set as the 138 tanks the K&C Valley project fills. | 138 tanks | p. 7 (PDF p. 7) |
Total ayacut of the minor irrigation tanks Printed as 'about 12146.55 Hecrates'. The taluk table's Total row prints 138 tanks, 12146.55 ha and a live capacity of 5180.63 Mcft. | 12,146.55 ha | p. 7 (PDF p. 7) |
Tanks under the Zilla Panchayat | 2,328 tanks | p. 8 (PDF p. 8) |
Water bodies in the district (profile count) Printed as 'around 2466'; custodians named as urban local bodies, the Zilla Panchayat and the minor irrigation department. The water-quality table on PDF page 67 counts 2568 lakes and ponds instead (next figure); the contradiction is the plan's. | 2,466 water bodies | p. 8 (PDF p. 8) |
Lakes and ponds, including Zilla Panchayat and minor irrigation tanks The same cell prints '56354.28 Hectares' on its next line, with no label of its own. The profile on PDF page 8 counts 2466 water bodies instead. | 2,568 lakes and ponds | p. 67 (PDF p. 67) |
Secondary-treated water lifted from the K&C Valley STP, Bengaluru, to fill tanks for groundwater recharge From the year 2019-20, per the plan. A design lift as stated, not a measured flow. | 440 MLD | p. 8 (PDF p. 8) |
Tanks the K&C Valley project fills in Kolar and Chintamani taluk Includes tanks in Chintamani taluk of Chikkaballapur district, so not a Kolar-only count. PDF page 70 splits the 138 as 45 MI, 88 PRED, 02 KUWS&DB and 02 Municipal Administration, which add to 137; that arithmetic is ours, not the plan's. | 138 tanks | p. 8 (PDF p. 8) |
Lakes KSPCB monitors in the district The plan says all 37 meet CPCB class D water quality criteria. Also stated on PDF page 70 ('KSPCB is monitoring the 37 lakes in the district'). | 37 lakes | p. 72 (PDF p. 72) |
Total sewage from towns and cities, as the plan states it Six ULBs: CMC Kolar 6.2, CMC KGF 6, CMC Mulbagal 3, Bangarpet 4.5, TMC Malur 1.8, TMC Srinivasapura 2.2. Those rows add to 23.7 (our arithmetic), and the same rows on PDF page 80 print 'Total 23.7'; the plan prints 17.5 here, in the table's Total row and again on PDF page 78. | 17.5 MLD | p. 67 (PDF p. 67) |
Industrial waste water generated The plan says it is treated and either recycled or used on land for gardening. The same figure is printed on PDF page 83 ('[MLD]: 3.32171'). | 3.322 MLD | p. 68 (PDF p. 68) |
Industries generating waste water PDF page 83 prints the same 56 as 'No of Industries discharging waste water' and as industries meeting standards, out of 550 operating industries (77 red, 120 orange, 312 green, 41 white). | 56 industries | p. 68 (PDF p. 68) |
Bore wells The row asks for bore wells and the number of extraction permissions; the plan prints only this bore-well count, with no permission count. | 29,463 bore wells | p. 68 (PDF p. 68) |
Action points the plan sets for water: environmental monitoring cell shall be constituted involving all the stake holders by district administration, to maintain data of all water bodies including their water quality (timeline dec-2022).; kspcb shall increase the number of lakes for sampling (timeline dec-2022).; ground water authorities shall fix the frequency of monitoring of bore wells as per the cpcb guidelines and furnish the reports to district administration.; inventory of domestic sewage drains and storm water drains discharging waste water to water bodies shall be carried out by ulbs, grama panchayaths and taluk panchayaths.; due to incomplete ugd connection, missing links exist; the completion of ugd work and connection shall be made.; septage management in the areas where sewerage network does not exist; for tmc bangarpet, fsmm proposed and under tender.; formulation of an action plan for long term use of treated water discharged from stps.; laying of sewerage network and connection of households to the sewer line shall be made.. Two things to know when reading the PDF: Two counts of water bodies: PDF page 8 says 'There are around 2466 water bodies in Kolar districts' and 'There are 2328 tanks are coming under Zilla Pancyat', while the water-quality table on PDF page 67 prints 'Lakes/Ponds 2568 including ZP and MI tanks'. With the 138 minor-irrigation tanks of PDF page 7, 2328 + 138 = 2466; that arithmetic is ours, not the plan's. Both counts are transcribed. Town sewage is printed as 17.5 MLD on PDF page 67 (the Total row of the ULB table too) and on PDF page 78, but the six ULB rows beneath it (6.2, 6, 3, 4.5, 1.8, 2.2) add to 23.7 (our arithmetic), and the same six rows on PDF page 80 print 'Total 23.7'. Treatment capacity is printed as 'Total available Treatment Capacity [MLD]: 17.5 MLD' with a column Total of 17.5 on PDF page 79, while the same column (10.16, '06 under construction', 6.3, '--', 04, 3.1) prints 'Total 23.7 29.56 19.2' on PDF page 80, 29.56 being the capacity total. The four operating plants listed add to 23.56 (our arithmetic). Neither 17.5 nor 29.56 is transcribed as a capacity figure. PDF page 76 prints 'No of Towns STPs installed [Nos]: 3Nos.' while its table lists an existing capacity for four ULBs (Kolar, Mulbagal, Malur, Srinivasapura) and '06 under construction' for KGF; PDF page 77 prints 'No of Towns needing STPs [Nos]: 6 Nos' while the per-ULB column beneath marks only TMC Bangarpet ('01'). PDF page 68 says 'untreated sewage is not quantified', while PDF page 79 prints 'Quantity of untreated or partially treated sewage (directly or in directly) [ MLD] : Nil'. The water-quality table on PDF page 68 prints 'Polluted river stretches if any Nil' and 'Ground water polluted areas if any' with '---'. Neither is a number, so neither is a figure. PDF page 8 says 'So far 83.84 TMC of water has been pumped to 138 tanks and 133 check dams.' At the plan's own lift of 440 MLD that volume would take about 15 years of continuous pumping (1 TMC is about 28,317 ML), for a project the same paragraph dates to 2019-20; that arithmetic is ours, not the plan's. Not transcribed as a figure; left for the second reading. The K&C Valley '138 tanks' (PDF page 8) are 'in Kolar & Chantamani taluk of Chickballapur District', so not a Kolar-only count, and are a different set from the 138 minor-irrigation tanks of PDF page 7. PDF page 70 splits them as 45 MI, 88 PRED, 02 KUWS&DB and 02 Municipal Administration, which add to 137 (our arithmetic). The domestic-sewage action plan on PDF page 81 names 'upcoming STPs viz., TP Hanur and TP Yelandur'; neither is one of the six Kolar ULBs the plan lists (both are Chamarajanagar district towns).
Not yet on file for this district
Named gaps, kept short: each becomes a section of its own when its source is wired.
- Water bodies. The First Census of Water Bodies Karnataka return on data.gov.in lists 1,304 rows for Kolar, but each row's id carries a local serial rather than the Census 2011 village code the Panchayat join reads, and Mulbagal taluk has a single row, so nothing is counted here until a reviewed join exists.
- Floods and scarcity. No Karnataka classification of flood-prone districts and no scarcity (tanker) register is wired yet, so nothing is said here about floods or drought.
- CPCB polluted river stretches. CPCB's polluted river stretch list is served per district from one national reviewed input, which does not cover this district yet, so nothing is said here about its rivers.
Find a Gram Panchayat
Every one of the 154 LGD-coded Gram Panchayats is listed. A place shows a water profile only where its evidence cleared the floor (identity, population and drinking-water service established); the rest are directory records, kept so they can be found and reviewed.

The district on a map
Every Panchayat with a mapped boundary is plotted from the centre of its own DataMeet polygon, not from a hand-entered coordinate. The marker is the Panchayat, not a settlement.
154 of 154 Panchayats have a marker. The LGD export lists 286 of the district's 1,825 villages under its 154 Panchayats, one or two each, so the union of a Panchayat's listed villages is not its extent: no outline or area is drawn until the full village-to-Panchayat mapping is on file.
How current these figures are
Not everything on this page is from the same year, and the gap is large. What each figure describes is listed separately from when the Atlas last read it, straight from each artifact's own record.

The land, irrigation and seasonal-source figures are the oldest thing here by a wide margin. India’s 2021 census did not take place, so Census 2011 remains the most recent village-level enumeration and there is no newer source of the same granularity to replace it with. Those figures are kept under capabilities named historical, and the current-crop capability is left empty rather than answered with a 2009 number.
